Why You Should Consider a Gemstone Engagement Ring

There are plenty of reasons to pick a gemstone engagement ring over a diamond center stone.  As they are popular right now, gemstones have also been a favorite throughout history. All you need to do is browse through a vintage jewelry retailer, and you'll find no shortage of pretty engagement rings filled with emeralds, sapphires, and rubies. Here are some of the most common reasons you might be considering a gemstone engagement ring.

You want your ring to feel unique.

All of your friends seem to be getting married at the same time, and every single bride seems to have a version of the same diamond engagement ring. For women with unique sensibilities and original style, they may feel more comfortable with a ring that sets them apart from the crowd, whether that be bold (below, left) or demure (below, right).

Nude gemstones can give the illusion of longer fingers.

A stone that is close to the bride's skin tone can elongate her fingers just as a pair of nude pumps can elongate her legs. While diamonds can do this for paler skin coloring, it doesn't have quite the same effect for medium to deep skin tones. Speaking from personal experience, a gemstone in a longer shape (such as an emerald cut) and in a subtle hue close to your skin tone can be the ultimate cure-all for stubby fingers and plump hands.  So, if you have always shied away from rings because you didn't like how they looked on your hands, give gemstones a try first.

You really love color.

Some ladies love creamy neutrals and others can't get enough of bold, luscious shades.  If you're the latter, a gemstone is going to feel like the quintessential representation of your style. After all, you want an engagement ring that feels like it was made for you.  Pick your favorite shade or one that holds personal significance, such as a birth stone or replicating a close family member's ring.

You don't support the glamorization of diamonds.

First, it should be clear that in today's jewelry market, there are countless reputable companies that can sell you conflict-free diamonds.  Countless.  However, some women are uncomfortable with the popularity of this particular stone and the cost it had on societies in other parts of the world.  If you feel strongly, select another gemstone, although you should be aware that you need to make sure they were also responsibly sourced.
